80 kilometers southwest from Koh Phayam, Surin is world renowned for its beauty and rich marine life. It is Thailand’s largest snorkeling paradise with 7 square kilometers of spectacular coral reef colonies. There are 5 islands in Surin, consisting of 2 main islands; Koh Surin Neua (North Surin Island) and Koh Surin Tai (South Surin Island). The remaining 3 islands are Koh Ree (Koh Stork), Koh Klang (Pajumpa), and Koh Khai (Torinla).
Dolphins, stingrays, and even shark whales (the largest fish in the world) can be seen every now and then in the vicinity of the Surin island, especially near Richelieu Rock. This is the dive site situated 18 kilometers southeast of Surin Islands, famous for its numerous varieties of fish species. The surrounding areas of all the 5 islands offer excellent snorkeling environments and scuba diving sites. In fact, the first snorkeling trail in Thailand was established in Ao Suthep, off the northern shore of Koh Surin Tai, enabling visitors to study marine life from its actual surroundings.
Surin is not only well known for its underwater splendor, but also for its rich tropical rain forest and mangrove, home to exotic array of wildlife. More than 100 species of birds can be found here. Furthermore, visitors who favor cultural exploration may gain knowledge from sea gypsy villages located on the island.
